Joule Thief and RF Detector

Chip charges battery, switches on at dark, buck converter voltage boost.  Designed for garden light.

Fantastic hack page.

The YX8018 is widely used in low-cost solar garden lights and similar applications, but it’s manufactured as a generic chip with limited information about its quality across manufacturers. If your goal is decades of operation without repair, you might consider the following points:

Manufacturers and Quality

  1. YX8018 Source:

    • The YX8018 is typically produced by lesser-known manufacturers focused on cost-efficiency rather than high reliability.

    • It’s difficult to identify specific "high-quality" manufacturers for the YX8018, as it is not marketed for industrial or long-life applications. However, purchasing from a reputable electronics distributor (e.g., Mouser, Digi-Key, or a trusted eBay seller with good reviews) might increase your chances of getting a consistent product.

  2. Alternative ICs with Higher Quality:

    • Consider more established brands known for their reliable ICs in power management and LED drivers. These companies typically follow stringent quality control standards:

      • Texas Instruments (TI): Offers LED driver ICs with boost functionality and excellent documentation.

      • Maxim Integrated: Known for precision LED driver circuits and high reliability.

      • ON Semiconductor (now onsemi): Provides robust and efficient LED driver solutions.

Higher-Quality Alternatives

If the YX8018 doesn’t inspire confidence for your long-term needs, here are some higher-quality alternatives:

  1. Texas Instruments TPS61099 Series:

    • Features: Low-power boost converter designed for driving LEDs with excellent efficiency and low quiescent current.

    • Advantages: High reliability, extensive documentation, and availability from reputable suppliers.

  2. Maxim MAX16834:

    • Features: High-efficiency LED driver IC with boost and buck-boost modes.

    • Advantages: Designed for long life and precise current control; suitable for demanding applications.

  3. Linear Technology (Analog Devices) LT1932:

    • Features: Constant-current LED driver IC with boost converter capability.

    • Advantages: Exceptional reliability and precision, often used in critical applications.

  4. Low-Power Microcontrollers with Integrated LED Drivers:

    • Example: Silicon Labs EFM32 or similar devices with integrated low-power LED drivers for solar or battery applications.

    • Advantages: Programmable and highly efficient, suitable for sophisticated setups.

  5. Commonly Used Zener Diodes for LED Protection

  6. For typical LED voltages, here are some common Zener diode voltage ratings and their applications:

  7. Zener Voltage (V)LED Application

  8. 2.4VRed, Infrared LEDs

  9. 3.3VGreen, Amber LEDs

  10. 3.9V–5.1VBlue, White LEDs
